Baker & McKenzie Elects Eduardo Leite of Brazil as Next Chairman

Baker & McKenzie announced that Eduardo Leite has been elected the next Chairman of the Firm’s Executive Committee. Mr. Leite’s new role will begin on October 30, upon the conclusion of the Firm’s Annual Meeting in Chicago. He will succeed John Conroy, who is concluding his second term as Chairman after having served on the Firm’s Executive Committee since 1998.
An accomplished energy, infrastructure projects, and mergers and acquisitions lawyer based in São Paulo, Mr. Leite served alongside Mr. Conroy on Baker & McKenzie’s Executive Committee from 1999 to 2003, and he chaired the Firm’s Policy Committee in 2005. He currently heads the Firm’s Global Energy, Mining & Infrastructure Practice Group and, since 2003, has been the managing partner of the four offices in Brazil. Mr. Leite, who is fluent in three languages, also spent several years working in Baker & McKenzie’s Chicago and Miami offices.
The Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie is the Firm’s primary management team, with responsibility for developing and implementing the Firm’s global business strategy, as well as managing the day-to-day business of the Firm. It consists of eight elected partners, including the Chairman.
Commenting on his new role, Mr. Leite said: “I'm honored and humbled to have been selected by my colleagues around the world to become the next Chairman of the Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie. I am also fortunate to assume this new role when the Firm is financially strong and competitively well-positioned. Our unparalleled global platform of offices, practices and expertise makes us a natural match for the business and legal needs of companies in all sectors at a time when global economies are increasingly interdependent.”
Mr. Leite added: “Change is transforming the business world and, with it, the legal profession. As we have for more than 60 years, Baker & McKenzie will continue to lead and embrace that change, to ensure that we stay ahead of the curve in meeting our clients' evolving needs. The fluent way in which we serve our clients is our greatest strength and will remain a critical success factor in the future.”
Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Conroy said: “I will be delighted to pass the baton in October to my good friend and colleague, Eduardo Leite. Having had the privilege to work closely with Eduardo over many years, I know that he is eminently well-qualified and a proven leader – a terrific choice to take our Firm forward. He has my warmest congratulations on his well-deserved election.“
Since adopting and implementing its current strategy in 2004, Baker & McKenzie:
•has increased its global fees by 72% to US$2.11 billion, regaining the top position for revenues in the American Lawyer 100;
•has increased profits per partner by 52% and at a faster compounded annual rate than the Legal Business Global 50 overall, at the same time it was growing rather than shrinking its partner ranks;
•has dramatically improved its rankings across a range of global geographic markets, practices and industry areas (see At the Top) and in respected, client-based surveys from Corporate Board Member magazine, BTI Consulting and others;
•received recognition by global business as the strongest law firm brand in the world, according to the 2009 SharpLegal Brands study by Acritas;
•has gained recognition for its innovative talent management program (as described in Harvard Business School Case Studies, Baker & McKenzie (A & B) - A New Framework for Talent Management);
•and became the first law firm to receive the Foreign Policy Association’s prestigious Corporate Social Responsibility award for its CSR initiatives.
Founded in 1949, Baker & McKenzie advises many of the world’s most dynamic and successful business organizations through 67 offices in 39 countries. Baker & McKenzie is known for having a deep understanding of the language and culture of business, an uncompromising commitment to excellence, and world-class fluency in its client service. Baker & McKenzie’s global revenues for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2009, were US$2.11 billion. For more information, visit www.bakermckenzie.com.
