International law firm Dechert LLP announced today its leadership transition plans. G. Daniel O'Donnell has assumed the role of vice chairman and has also been designated as chief executive officer-elect. Andrew J. Levander has been named chairman-elect. Current chairman and CEO Barton J. Winokur, O'Donnell, and Levander will work closely during a transition period that is expected to be completed by the middle of 2011, at which time O'Donnell would become the CEO and Levander would assume the role of chair. Winokur, who assumed the roles of chairman and CEO in 1996, will continue practicing law as a full-time partner following the transition. "I have worked closely with Dan for nearly 30 years. During my time as chairman, he has been a key part of the leadership of the firm and has been involved in every significant firm decision. I've worked closely with Andy for five years. He has been an important leader in both thought and action and he too has been an essential participant in every major decision," said Winokur. "I look forward to working closely with them both during the transition and thereafter as well." O'Donnell, who joined the firm following his graduation from law school in 1976, is a nationally recognized advisor to private equity fund sponsors, corporations, and financial institutions as well as company management, boards of directors, and special committees. He represents clients on public and private mergers and acquisitions-both domestically and internationally-as well as corporate restructurings and corporate governance matters. O'Donnell has been recognized for six consecutive years as a top lawyer for corporate/mergers and acquisitions and private equity by Chambers USA, where he has also been ranked among leading lawyers nationally for private equity buyouts. In addition, he is listed in The Legal 500, The Best Lawyers in America, and as a leading dealmaker in The Lawdragon 500 Leading Dealmakers. "We all recognize that Bart has played an enormous role in the firm's success," O'Donnell said. "He has shepherded the firm through some tremendous periods of growth, and of course, most recently through an economic downturn that has rattled the legal industry. I am honored that the partnership has selected me to preserve this legacy and to help lead the firm forward." A renowned litigator, Levander is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Unit. He has been consistently recognized for excellence by numerous legal publications, including Corporate Counsel, which recently listed him as a "bet the company" lawyer. Chambers has cited Levander as "in the top league," a "consummate professional and brilliantly effective litigator," and "one of the brightest, most effective lawyers in New York." In addition, he was recognized as a top-tier attorney in the areas of securities shareholder litigation and white collar criminal defense in 2009 by The Legal 500 (U.S.), and in March 2009 he was named by The Lawyer as one of the 25 "Transatlantic Elite." Levander expects to continue to devote the large majority of his time to his robust practice. "Under Bart, Dechert has grown from a primarily regional firm to a top-tier, international firm," said Levander, who joined Dechert in 2005 as a part of a group of 57 lawyers from Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman. "We all recognize that he has led us on this path to success. I'm certain we are on the right course and I am grateful for the confidence placed in me by our partners." Winokur has continued to practice law throughout his tenure as chairman. Among his recent notable matters was the representation of the Haas Family Trusts during its negotiations with Dow Chemical in the acquisition of Rohm and Haas. Winokur joined Dechert in 1965 and has been a corporate partner since 1972. He previously served as the chair of the mergers and acquisitions and international law groups, and was the resident partner of the London office from 1975 to 1979. During Winokur's tenure as chairman, Dechert has expanded significantly in both size and scope. The firm has offices in 19 cities, with eight outside the United States, including the most recently opened offices in Moscow, Beijing, and Hong Kong.
