DLA Piper continues emerging market investment with new office in Turkey

At a launch briefing held in Istanbul, leading international legal firm DLA Piper  announced that it is establishing an office in Istanbul to serve the growing number of its clients now doing business in Turkey, having obtained the necessary approval from the Istanbul Bar. The new office, effective 1 June 2010, which will provide advice on international and foreign law only, marks another important step in the advancement of DLA Piper's strategic vision to be the world's leading business law firm.
It was also announced that six Turkish partners from the leading law firm, YükselKarkınKüçük Attorney Partnership ("YKK"), will become members of DLA Piper International LLP with permission from the Istanbul Bar. YKK, a 46-lawyer firm in Istanbul, has six partners including co-managing partners, Murat Karkın and Cüneyt Yüksel, and other partners Zeynep Ergun, Melek Yüksel, Muharrem Kücük and Gökhan Gökçe. YKK provides a range of local legal services including corporate, M&A, energy, competition/antitrust, IP, banking and finance, employment, real estate and litigation-arbitration, and remains as a separate law firm.
Upon entering the Turkish market, DLA Piper will have 68 offices in 30 countries and a presence in the world's 17th largest economy. The move reaffirms DLA Piper's commitment to invest in the world's emerging economies and follows its advancement into the Latin America market in March 2010, through its cooperation with Brazilian firm, Campos Mello Advogados, with offices in Rio de Janeiro and Săo Paulo.
Speaking at the media briefing held to mark the launch of the new office, DLA Piper's joint CEO, Sir Nigel Knowles, said: "This is an extremely important step for us and will enhance our ability to serve the needs of our clients, an increasing number of whom are doing business in Turkey. Turkey's importance on the international stage is growing and our strategic vision guides us to continue to invest in such key growth markets around the world. I would also like to welcome our six new colleagues from Turkey."
DLA Piper is one of the largest legal service providers in the world, with global revenues of US$1.948 billion for the year ending 2009 and more than 8,000 people across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the US, including 3,500 lawyers. With a reputation for global growth and investment in the emerging markets, DLA Piper's entrance into the Turkish market is consistent with its global strategy. DLA Piper has offices in most of the G-20 countries and following its entrance to the Turkey market it will have a presence in each of the member countries across Europe.
Former US Ambassador to Turkey and now Senior Adviser to DLA Piper, Marc Grossman also spoke at the media briefing, adding: "The opening of the DLA Piper office in Turkey shows the firm's commitment to global engagement with its clients, who require quality legal advice in all key international markets. It is also a clear statement about the future of Turkey and its regional and international importance."
More than 500 clients and prominent Turkish business leaders will attend a private reception to mark the launch of DLA Piper's Turkey office. The reception will also be attended by senior government representatives, the US Ambassador to Turkey, James F Jeffrey, and UK Consul General to Turkey, Jessica Hand.
DLA Piper's entrance to the market will give Turkish companies access to a wider range of skilled lawyers able to advise on cross-border matters. The international legal practice is expected to advise across a broad range of legal matters, including M&A, corporate finance, infrastructure and public private partnerships, where DLA Piper has extensive experience. DLA Piper's Italian office is currently advising the Turkish Ministry of Health on the structuring and procurement of the first healthcare PPP project in Turkey, which will see a new 1,500 bed hospital built in the area of Kayseri.
