Reed Smith bolsters its energy group with further partner hire

International law firm Reed Smith has announced the appointment of John Varholy to its Energy, Trade & Commodities group (ETC group) based in London. John will join the firm’s partnership on 8th March from the London office of US firm Troutman Sanders, where he was both a founding and Managing Partner, and most recently served as the leader of its Trading, Hedging and Marketing Practice Group.
John started his career with Texaco and Mobil Oil, before moving into private practice initially in the US and for the last 10 years in Europe. He provides energy and utility companies, trading houses and banks with broad transactional, risk management and regulatory law support and has become one of the industry’s leading specialists in the trading, hedging and marketing of energy and related derivative products. John has long been at the centre of standardization efforts in the energy industry in both North American and Europe. As the long time Outside General Counsel to the European Federation of Energy Traders, he has assisted its members in developing what are now the industry standard contracts employed throughout Europe for the trading of power, natural gas, pipeline capacity and emissions allowances.
John’s appointment follows that of partner Siân Fellows, who joined the firm’s ETC group from Shell in January this year, where she had been senior counsel supporting Shell’s emissions business.
Kyri Evagora, partner and head of Reed Smith’s Energy Trade & Commodities Group, commented: “2009 was an extremely successful year for many of our energy and commodities trading clients and consequently a very busy one for us. John’s appointment, coupled with the arrival of partner Siân Fellows earlier this year, is reflective of growing demand from our clients in this sector.”
John Varholy commented: “I’m very excited to be joining such a well recognised and respected energy and commodities practice. Reed Smith’s acknowledged expertise in the sector, combined with its wide international reach will enable me to offer a very broad range of support to my regular clients and by the same token I look forward to sharing my experience in power, gas and emissions with the Reed Smith team and its own clients.”
