NOTICIAS/ NEWS INTERNACIONAL published FEBRUARY 12, 2010 Prof. Björn Gaul and Dr Eckhard Schmid new employment law coordinators at CMS Hasche Sigle Dr. Prof. Björn Gaul and Dr. Eckhard Schmid have been appointed as new heads of the Employment Law practice area, assuming responsibility for a multi-location team of more than 70 specialists at CMS Hasche Sigle. The team advises on all aspects of individual and collective employment law within the German and international CMS network. The practice group's clients include German and international SMEs, local and foreign investors, major enterprises and groups, as well as supervisory board members and senior executives. Sector groups within the practice area (e.g. energy; financial services providers; technology, media & telecoms [TMT]) ensure that expertise is also focused on industry-specific aspects. The key areas covered by CMS employment lawyers include • strategic restructuring, including cross-border transfer transactions, • employment law aspects of restructuring (outsourcing, substantial reorganisation of operations and staff adjustments), • support for M&A transactions, • optimising collective labour conditions and developing new remuneration systems, • structural issues relating to company pension schemes and • support for state institutions during privatisations. The practice group also advises and represents supervisory board members and senior executives, especially with regard to compliance matters, group structure and liability for corporate conduct. This includes in-court representation, drawing on colleagues from other practice areas as necessary. Professor Dr Björn Gaul was born in 1966 and studied law in Cologne with a period spent in New York. He has worked in CMS Hasche Sigle’s current Cologne office since 1995 and been a partner since 2000. As a specialist employment lawyer he chairs HR workgroups and completed a postdoctoral lecture qualification on employment law aspects of operational and company splits in 2001. He has been teaching as adjunct professor at the University of Cologne since 2005 in the areas of civil law, commercial law and employment law. Dr Eckhard Schmid was born in 1958 and studied law in Constance after completing a banking apprenticeship in Heilbronn. After periods spent in Italy, Spain, France and the USA as well as working in the personnel department of the German Federal Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Branch Office of Bayerische Landesbank, Schmid was admitted to the bar in 1989. The employment law specialist has been working at CMS Hasche Sigle’s current Munich office since 1990 and has been a partner since 1995. Prior to Gaul and Schmid, Dr Antje-Kathrin Uhl headed the Employment Law practice area from 2007.
