Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP announced that Richard S. Aldrich Jr., a leading capital markets lawyer, will be joining the firm as a partner and head of the São Paulo office. Mr. Aldrich, a partner at Shearman & Sterling since 1983, was the co-head and founder of that firm’s São Paulo office, which opened in 2004. Focusing on private and public financings, he has represented financial institutions and Brazilian companies in their global financing and M&A transactions. “Skadden’s concerted effort to grow our Latin America practice has been bolstered significantly with the addition of Richard Aldrich,” said Robert C. Sheehan, the firm’s executive partner. “His in-depth knowledge of the region and the Brazilian market in particular enhances our efforts to serve clients around the world on transactions involving Latin America.” Mr. Aldrich is a prominent figure in the Brazilian business community. In 2008, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations honored him with the Order of Rio Branco in recognition of his 20-year commitment to improving Brazilian-U.S. relations, and most recently he served as the president of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce. Fluent in Portuguese, he has been called “the dean of the U.S. legal community in Brazil” by Chambers Latin America 2009. Mr. Aldrich is ranked in the top tier for Corporate and Finance in Latin America and for Capital Markets in Brazil by Chambers Global 2008. “Simply put, he is one of the best capital markets lawyers ever,” said a client, quoted in Chambers Global 2008. Active in Brazil since 1987, Mr. Aldrich represented the Bank Advisory Committee for Brazil in the country’s foreign debt restructuring from 1987 to 1994. In addition he has been involved in many notable Brazilian transactions including IPOs, debt offerings and mergers and acquisitions, including IPOs for Aracruz (the first SEC-registered, NYSE-listed offering by a Brazilian company), Embraer, VCP, Usiminas and Natura; in Brazil’s 1999 U.S. $3 billion debt exchange and bond offering; Votorantim’s acquisition of cement facilities in the United States; and debt restructurings of Net Servicos andAES Sul. More recently, he has handled equity offerings for Nossa Caixa, Medial and Copasa; the sale by Votorantim of two subsidiaries to Monsanto; secondary offerings for Usiminas, Embraer and Eletropaulo; and debt offerings for Embraer, Usiminas, Lupatech, and Ambev, among others. At Skadden, Mr. Aldrich joins a Latin America practice that was established two decades ago and which opened its São Paulo office, its first in the region, in 2008. Named the “Best Legal Advisor for Latin America” for 2007 by Global Finance magazine, Skadden has advised on more than 75 matters (including 25 corporate financings, 25 M&A deals, 10 project financings and 15 restructuring/banking matters) in 17 countries throughout the region.
