Johnson Also Elected Partner in Firm’s D.C. Office
Bryan Cave names Broderick Johnson to lead firm’s new Public Policy & Governmental Affairs practice group

Bryan Cave announced that Broderick Johnson , 52, has been elected as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Johnson is the chairman of Bryan Cave Strategies LLC, the firm’s bipartisan public policy and governmental affairs subsidiary, and formerly also served as of counsel to the firm. In this new role, he will establish and lead the firm’s new Public Policy & Governmental Affairs Client Service Group.
The new client service group comprises Bryan Cave Strategies as well as the firm’s election law practice, led by Michael Toner, and Powell Goldstein’s Public Policy Practice, which was acquired during the two firms’ recent combination. Approximately 25 attorneys and consulting professionals will staff the group in offices across the U.S. The formation of the group underscores the continued expansion of Bryan Cave’s presence in governmental affairs consulting.
“As the Bryan Cave Strategies practice has grown and developed, we believe it is advantageous to more closely integrate the practice with our firm as a whole,” said Don Lents, chairman of Bryan Cave. “Since he joined us in 2007, Broderick has played an integral role in the progress of Bryan Cave Strategies. With the change in administration in Washington, we anticipate opportunities to expand our government affairs practice with Broderick as the leader of our new client service group.”
Most recently, Johnson served as an informal adviser to the campaign of President-Elect Barack Obama.
Among the highlights of Johnson’s long career in politics and public affairs, from 1998-2000 he served in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Most significantly, he was named deputy assistant to the president and House liaison, acting as the Clinton administration’s primary advocate before the U.S. House of Representatives in 1999 and 2000. In 2004, he served as senior congressional affairs adviser for the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign. As a private sector lobbyist from 2000-2007, Johnson served as vice president for congressional affairs with AT&T and BellSouth corporations, where he worked extensively with the Democratic leadership in Congress.
Johnson began his legal career in 1983 when he was appointed assistant counsel in the House of Representatives’ Office of Legislative Counsel. In 1989, he joined the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley, Rein & Fielding. After four years, Johnson returned to Congress to serve as majority staff director and chief counsel for the House Committee in the District of Columbia (1993-1995) and served as Democratic chief counsel for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce under ranking member William Clay (D–Mo.) from 1995-1998. Johnson has been a member of the District of Columbia Bar since 1984.
Johnson received his J.D. in 1983 from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. in philosophy in 1978 from the College of the Holy Cross.
