Freshfields appoints new global head of dispute resolution

International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer announced the appointment of Chris Pugh to the role of global practice group leader for the firm’s dispute resolution group. The appointment is effective from 1 January 2009.
Chris succeeds Ian Terry, who has completed a three-year term in the position. Ian will be returning to a full-time role as commercial disputes partner in the dispute resolution practice group.
Commenting on Chris’s appointment, Guy Morton, joint senior partner at Freshfields, said: ‘Chris is an excellent lawyer and a great client partner. He is an ideal successor to Ian in the role of dispute resolution practice group leader. Under Ian’s leadership our dispute resolution group has expanded its international reach and further enhanced its reputation for the quality of its service in critical situations. The firm is very grateful to Ian for his leadership.’
Commenting on his new role, Chris said: ‘I am really looking forward to the role. These are very difficult times for clients but they are times in which disputes lawyers have real experience and assistance to offer. We have an extremely strong group which is both truly international and diverse in the advice it can provide. We have recently been instructed in the most testing situations and we aim to continue to be at the heart of the
resolution of market adjustments and to provide support to our clients in dealing with the disputes that are arising.’

Profile
Chris Pugh has been a partner in the dispute resolution group since 1991. He has a wide-ranging practice with experience in many different sectors including energy, financial institutions and telecoms. He is well-known as a commercial litigator and arbitrator. His clients on major cases have included Hutchison Whampoa, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Lehman Brothers, BG, Brookfield, Abbey National and ABN AMRO.
