European law firm SJ Berwin LLP has advised Chelsfield Partners LLP (Chelsfield) on the 20% investment by the Qatar Investment Authority (the QIA) in Chelsfield for an undisclosed sum. As part of its investment, the QIA gained two seats on the management board of Chelsfield. Chelsfield is a London based property investment vehicle which was established by Elliot Bernerd and Sir Stuart Lipton and it principally invests in real estate in the UK and Europe. It owns sites such as Camden market in North London and The Parabola (formerly occupied by The Commonwealth Institute) in Kensington High Street. Chelsfield also holds investments in developing business such as Genr8 and London & Newcastle in the UK, Griffin in Poland and Milestone Capitol in France. The QIA was established in 2003 to diversify Qatar’s oil wealth and has invested significant amounts in the London property market, acquiring a stake in Chelsea Barracks in February 2008. It also owns a share in the Shard of Glass office development at London Bridge and Songbird Estates which has extensive interests in Canary Wharf.
